Program & Role Description: The Career Foundation’s entry-level Cannabis Production Worker Training & Recruitment Program provides job seekers with industry training that enhances skill sets, productivity, safety, and workplace communication while increasing job prospects and job mobility for workers in the Cannabis industry, all in a practical learning environment. 

The Instructor for the program will provide entry-level Cannabis Production training to 24 individuals, who need support to enter the field. This technical training will enable participants to work productively, safely and efficiently in accordance with Cannabis Production regulations. The successful candidate will have the experience, expertise, and ability to effectively instruct in the Cannabis industry in Ontario. The Instructor will be responsible for delivering provided curriculum, coordinating daily lessons that are engaging, evaluating student progress, recording and maintaining program inventory, and maintaining program documentation.

  • Position Type: Independent Contractor or Casual Employee Contract
  • Pay Rate: $100.00 per hour
  • Contract Duration: 10 weeks: March 21, 2022 to April 22, 2022 (5 weeks) and August 8, 2022 to September 9, 2022 (5 weeks); Schedule will be up to 8 hours of work per day, including 6 hours of instruction and 2 hours for lesson planning, class preparations, and grading. While full-time availability is preferred for the 10-week duration, an alternative part-time schedule will be considered based on the successful candidate’s availability.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Effectively oversees students and their daily in-class activities, including providing effective instruction, creating daily work plans that comply with provided curriculum, communicating learning objectives, measuring learning outcomes, and conducting competency testing.
  • Grades assignments and tests and signs off on skill competencies, providing feedback to students as appropriate.
  • Maintains accurate records of student achievement and attendance and maintains a respectful learning environment.
  • Provides necessary support and coaching to students and works collaboratively with program staff and all program partners to achieve program objectives.
  • Provides updates and reports concerns to the Program Coordinator as requested and works in collaboration with The Career Foundation’s Director of Workforce Development to discuss student issues, as needed.
  • Represents the program as a subject matter expert for students and all partners of the program, including the program’s advisory committee.  
  • Remains up-to-date on vocational and industry-related trends, employer requirements and new classroom instruction techniques.
  • Inspects all training equipment and tools daily to ensure safety, identifies and mitigates potential hazards, and provides or arranges for maintenance to be provided on equipment if needed.
  • Maintains communication with facility host organizations as necessary.
  • Promotes the program and its mission, goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates guest speakers and/or field trips, if permitted and appropriate.
  • Attends and participates in the students’ graduation ceremony (date to be determined).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching and/or training, ideally in the Cannabis industry or a related field, and relevant certifications/qualifications. Candidates who possess successful completion of relevant education and/or training in the Cannabis or Horticulture industry will be given preference.
  • Must be able to commute to and work from host facilities in London, Ontario and Hamilton, Ontario (each with a 5-week duration).
  • Current knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislations to further support students.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and ability to uphold the organization’s service standards, policies, and core values.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership and team management skills.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse groups, including those requiring additional supports.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and habits with current First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Able to motivate and train within an environment that will ensure the safety of students, equipment, and materials while providing proper supervision of hands-on technical training.
  • Sensitive and patient to the needs of a diverse group of inexperienced students, with a courteous approach to client service and a high level of respect for the diversity of the people served.
  • Effective knowledge sharing techniques and ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner while adapting teaching methods to enhance the learning experience for a diverse group of students.
  • Must be a professional and punctual, self-motivated individual who takes initiative.
  • Proven ability to maintain sensitive information and exhibit tact, diplomacy, and good judgment, while exacting standards of professionalism, ethics, and confidentiality.
  • Problem-solving skills and experience with conflict management.
  • Effective administration skills in order to maintain appropriate records, student attendance and performance, classroom inventories, etc.
